How to Avoid the Queen of Spades in Hearts
Track spades, manage dangerous leads, pass with a plan, and escape the queen of spades without collecting extra hearts.

The queen of spades is worth 13 points—the same as every heart combined. Avoiding it means managing who controls each spade trick, when spades become safe, and whether someone is trying to shoot the moon.
This guide matches YourGames: pass three cards left; 2♣ opens; follow suit when possible; hearts cannot lead until broken unless only hearts remain; and Q♠ or a heart cannot enter the first trick when a safe card exists.
Use a three-step queen safety check
Before every spade play ask: Have A♠ and K♠ appeared? How many lower spades remain? If you hold Q♠ while both honors are live, avoid leading spades and keep low guards so you can duck a high lead.
If you do not hold Q♠, an early A♠ or K♠ lead is risky: a player already void in spades can discard the queen onto your winning card. A low spade gathers information without volunteering for 13 points.
- Keep low guards with Q♠.
- Pass a short, unsupported queen when possible.
- After A♠, K♠ and Q♠ appear, other spades are safe.
Worked example: duck now, escape later
A low spade is an entry shield. Spending Q♠ merely because the current trick contains no ace or king gives away 13 points unnecessarily.
Example position
You hold Q♠, 8♠, 4♠. West leads 10♠; North plays 3♠ and East 6♠. Play 8♠, not Q♠. West wins and your 4♠ protects the queen from another lead. If K♠ comes next, play 4♠; only a later spade can force the queen.
Passing, moon defense, and common errors
Passing A♠ or K♠ works best when you also shorten spades enough to become void. Pass a coherent package: remove Q♠, create a useful void, or unload cards likely to win point tricks.
Late in the hand, count points. If one player has nearly every heart, stopping a moon matters more than personal queen safety; take one heart if it prevents a 26-point swing.
- Do not pass only the three highest cards without checking suit length.
- Remember which player received your cards.
- Do not keep leading spades after someone shows void.
- Do not help a moon attempt by ducking every point trick.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always pass Q♠?
No. It can be manageable with several low guards. Pass it when short or unsupported, or when doing so creates a useful void.
When is A♠ safe to lead?
Usually after Q♠ appears, or when card tracking shows nobody can discard it onto your ace.
What if I must take Q♠?
Minimize other points and monitor the moon. Attempt to shoot only if taking all 26 points is genuinely realistic.
