Mahjong Matching Strategy for Beginners
Use the free-tile test, plan across layers, manage duplicates, and recover intelligently when the layout stalls.
Rules checked against the playable version · Updated September 8, 2026
Mahjong solitaire is not memory alone. The challenge is choosing which legal pair improves access. The first visible pair may trap a duplicate under another layer.
On YourGames' 144-tile layout, a tile is free when no higher tile overlaps it and at least one horizontal side is open. Number, wind, and dragon tiles match exactly; flowers cross-match and seasons cross-match.
Apply the free-tile test
Check the top layer, then both sides. A visible face may still be blocked above or squeezed between neighbors.
When several copies are free, compare pairings. Prefer tiles that remove blockers in different regions or uncover more faces.
- Top tiles can cover several lower tiles.
- Outer-edge tiles release long rows.
- A pair freeing two tiles usually beats one freeing none.
Worked example: choose among copies
Identical pictures can have different strategic value. Compare all free copies first.
Example position
Three free 5 Bamboo tiles appear: one upper, one at the far left, and one isolated. Match the upper and edge copies to uncover lower tiles and open a row. Keep the isolated copy for the fourth 5 Bamboo that may be buried.
Plan layers and recover
Target central caps, tiles covering several others, and edges holding rows closed. Work in multiple regions so one unavailable match does not freeze progress.
If no pair remains, Hint confirms it and Shuffle rearranges active faces while retaining a solvable path. Use Shuffle as recovery, not instead of scanning.
- Do not match the nearest pair automatically.
- Do not clear one side while leaving the center capped.
- Do not require identical flower art.
- Do not confuse visible with free.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a tile free?
No higher active tile overlaps it, and at least one horizontal side is open.
Must flowers look identical?
No. Any flower matches another flower; any season matches another season.
What if no matches remain?
Use Hint to confirm, then Shuffle; it retains a solvable path.
